FoodQ brightens Christmas for city’s homelessMore than 100 of the city’s homeless will get a bon-bon of a different type with their Christmas dinner thanks to FoodQ and Vital Connection soup kitchen. At 2.30pm on Wednesday 16 December, FoodQ chairperson Jennifer Beadnell will present a cheque for $1500 to Vital Connection Chairperson Chris Foote in the soup kitchen at 19 Eagle Terrace, Brisbane Raised by FoodQ members and guests at a recent Christmas party by auctioning hampers and seeking donations on the night, the money will be used to buy care packages containing personal items such as a bar of soap and a toothbrush – seemingly basic items – but valuable to those living ‘rough’. What’s leftover will be used to support Vital Connection’s soup kitchen operations and community programs to help youth at risk from drug and alcohol abuse. FoodQ Chairperson Jennifer Beadnell said Christmas was a time when all businesses needed to give back to help others in the community. “As food manufacturers and producers, we’ve been wanting to do something to support the important work Vital Connection does in the community, so this was our way of brightening Christmas where it’s most needed – on the street,” Ms Beadnell said. “While many of our members are recovering from the effect of the global financial crisis, it has increased demand for organisations such as Vital Connection who are trying to feed increasing numbers of homeless people from as young as 17 to as elderly as 80.” ”We’re very grateful to have the opportunity to make a small difference to ‘streeties’ and brighten their Christmas.” Since 1995, Vital Connection has been preparing and dishing up three course meals for up to 100 homeless and disadvantaged people every Saturday, Sunday and Monday night at Emma Miller Place in Upper Roma Street, the city.
